Rhythmical Massage Therapy
Rhythmical Massage is based on an Anthroposophical understanding of illness and healing. It was developed by Dr Ita Wegman (a co-worker of Rudolf Steiner), and Dr Margarethe Hauschka at the therapeutic Clinic in Arlesheim, Switzerland.

Rhythmical Massage is of benefit in all stages of development from young children to old age. Children’s development stages can be challenging, especially around the 9-year-old ‘crisis’, and on entering puberty.

In a healthy human being, there is a harmonious relationship between the body and inner life. Such health depends on the bodily rhythmical processes (e.g. breathing and circulation), creating a balance between the breaking down process (Nerve sense system; conscious pole), and the building up process (Metabolic Limb system; unconscious pole). An imbalance of these poles leads to irregularities and ultimately illness or dis-ease. The task of this massage therapy is to help the body find its balance again by strengthening the rhythmical element.

The massage creates a gentle rhythm that warmly enlivens the soft tissue. It uses skills that lift and mobilise the soft tissue rather than applying pressure. The reason for this is the fact that gravity must be overcome within circulation; in all living fluids, there is a predominant levity. All movements include a releasing component, which enables clients to become aware of an inner spaciousness. Since all parts of the human organism are related and correspond with each other in manifold ways, it is not only the area of illness which is important to treat; sometimes a part of the body far removed from it is treated.

‘Rhythmical Massage Therapy is therefore a holistic treatment which must consider the single ailment against the background of the balance of forces within the whole human being. It is essential to execute movements on the body which clear the way for the autogenous healing forces to take hold of the condition. Therefore, it is an effective medium for reactivating psychological as well as bodily energies.’ Dr Margarethe Hauschka.
